Jed Lowrie and Khris Davis homered in the first inning to tarnish Hector Velazquez’s debut in the majors, and the Oakland Athletics crushed the Boston Red Sox 8-3 on Thursday.
Chad Pinder also hit a fourth-round homer off the Mexican Velazquez (0-1), who had a difficult first opening after spending his first seven years as a professional in the Mexican league.

Sonny Gray (1-1) overcame a dubious start to victory in the 100th opening of his career. After giving up two runs in a first-inning with 31 pitches, Gray settled down and allowed only one more touchdown in the rest of his six innings, striking out eight.
With a 2-0 lead before hitting the mound in its opening, Velázquez started to fall behind the fourth batter he faced, allowing a lowrie two-run homer and a solo Davis homer in Oakland’s first consecutive homers this season.
