The Red Sox got one of the most powerful straight-throwers in this year’s draft by selecting first-round right-hander Tanner Houck with the 24th pick Monday night.
The 20-year-old from the University of Missouri is known for the speed and movement of his straight. Houck has reached 98 miles per hour, although he usually throws between 92 and 96 miles.
If Houck wants to end up as a starter, he needs to improve his secondary shipments. He could be a dominant reliever.
This season with Missouri went 4-7 with a 3.33 ERA, 24 tickets and 95 strikeouts in 94.2 innings.
The Red Sox have taken many position players in recent drafts, but need some high-caliber arms in their minor league system. Houck could help them fill that vacancy.
