Right-hander Steven Wright will undergo left knee surgery next week and miss the rest of the season, the Red Sox announced on Thursday.
The knuckler will undergo a procedure to repair a cartilage in his left knee on May 8. The surgical intervention will be in charge of Dr. Riley Williams III at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
Wright sought a second opinion from Williams III this week, after being sent to the disabled list with a knee strain. Summoned to the All-Star Game with the Red Sox uniform last year, Wright was 1-3 and ERA 8.25 in five starts in 2017.
The right is expected to be ready for the start of the next campaign.
