Whit Merrifield drove the win run in the seventh inning, Eric Hosmer hit a two-run homer and the Kansas City Royals defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-2 on Monday to take their eighth win on nine dates.
Jason Hammel (4-6) pitched seven solid innings before leaving his place on the mound to Mike Minor, who filled the bases with two outs in the eighth. Boston’s ninth hitter Christian Vazquez wanted to send a slow ball to third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert fielded without problems and returned to first to cut the threat.
